In The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen, one wintery day an elderly woman watches as kids gather at a bus stop. She especially notices a little boy who doesn't have any mittens. That night she knits the boy some cozy mittens and puts them on a blue spruce tree for him. Then it becomes a game, with more children becoming part of the story.

Olivia Trevino’s preschool class at Marsh Elementary School took advantage of all the winter weather to explore picture books about mittens. The Mitten by Jim Aylesworth and The Mitten by Alvin Tresselt are two delightful versions of the Scandinavian folk tale about a group of animals that try to squeeze into a boy’s lost mitten.
