Online MS in Early Childhood Education – STEM Focus

Key benefits

• Increase skills to meet growing needs in early learning settings
• Develop relevant, in-demand expertise
• Sharpen competitive edge in the marketplace

How the program works

The concentration is comprised of five core courses in early development and learning, as well as a specialized sequence of five courses focused on the use, application and teaching of the STEM disciplines in the early childhood years.

You will also complete a capstone inquiry project where you will first design the foundation for the project, followed by implementation of the project in real time and finally analyzing the results.

MORE INFORMATION

Elevate your practice and strengthen your knowledge of teaching and learning in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with an emphasis on children in preschool through third grade. The concentration in Early Childhood STEM will provide you with the latest methods for ensuring that all young children start off on a strong STEM learning trajectory. The courses you will take will give you the necessary grounding in how children explore, play, and communicate about the natural and human-made world around them.

This is a one-of-kind program with courses developed by Early Math Collaborative and other Erikson departments as well as STEM education professionals in the field.

The program curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recommendations, as well as federal initiatives (Committee on STEM Education and National Science and Technology Council) to include preschool in STEM education reforms.

This concentration prepares you to seek the Illinois Gateways to Opportunity Early Care and Education (ECE) Level 5 Credential through the Entitled Route. To earn this credential, you will need to complete the appropriate Gateways applications and provide documentation of professional experiences and contributions.

There is a cultural belief that STEM subjects are harder to learn than humanities. In reality, all children can learn these subjects if we provide education that is developmentally appropriate, helping them to develop big ideas in STEM disciplines that are suitable to their level of understanding and thinking.

Jie-Qi Chen, PhD • Senior Vice President, Dean of Faculty, and Founder of Erikson’s Early Math Collaborative

The Erikson curriculum provides a comprehensive, integrated approach to STEM education in the early years that is informed by a deep understanding of development and cultural and community contexts.
