A Grid Game: The Math in Ten
Grid games can be some of the earliest experiences children have with board games. They are simple to make, easy to organize in a classroom, but also customizable to children’s interests. And they are inherently mathematical. Collecting small sets of counters to cover each space on the grid creates opportunities to notice and discuss the numbers on the dot cube and the sets of counters on the board.
Why is this important?
Games increase access to mathematical learning opportunities because there are few language barriers. Both students engage in this grid game and demonstrate their developing understanding despite limited language skills.
