Chicago Nonprofit Provides Books to Promote Development of Literacy and Math

The Early Math Collaborative’s Assistant Director of Instruction, Lisa Ginet, appeared on WBEZ this week to provide her thoughts on the opportunities to explore the math in many popular children’s books. Ginet’s segment starts around 14 minutes into the program.

This broadcast centers on BASICS: Books and Stories to Inspire Childhood Success, a nonprofit started by Sydney Steans-Gail, a Chicago high school senior. This organization provides new mothers with a collection of children’s books to expose their children to reading as early as possible. Stearns-Gail explains that in regards to a child’s literacy skills, “having books in the home is twice as important as the father’s education level.” These books can also provide avenues towards the development of important foundational math concepts.
